Title: Old Things
Course: Digital Photography
Artist: Alyssa Stults
Teacher: Mrs. Gollan
Subject Matter: Rusty metal and peeled paint I found downtown
Medium: Digital Photography
Project Goal: Make old, used things look beautiful
Personal Review/Evaluation and Critique: I think that these pictures are great because of their textures. The peeling paint and the rust on metals really had nice textures that made my pictures look nice. Also, I really like these pictures because of the vibrant colors they have in them. Even though this day was not super sunny, there is nice natural lighting along with vibrant colors to brighten up the pictures. There are many lines in these pictures. There are a variety of lines. There are vertical lines within the brick, horizontal lines in the metal fence, and eccentric lines in the rusty corner. In these pictures, I think that there is an emphasis on the rust/peeled away paint. The part of the picture that looks used/work away is where the emphasis is put. I think that is where the focus should be. In this project, I think I used the rule of thirds well. For example, I did not put the rust on the stairs right in the center of the picture. Also, There is a focal point on the left side and the right side of the picture in the peeled paint brick photo. I really liked exploring downtown to see what I could find that was used. Milford is such a cute town and I really enjoyed finding evidence of its past/use. An area that need improvement is adjusting my lighting settings so that there is a little more light being let into the lens in the rusty stairs picture and a little less in the rusty corner picture. A strength of this project was my keen eyes searching for the rust/peeled paint downtown. Some of these things I had to think about where I could find them. A weakness would again, be my inability to see on my camera that the pictures are over/underexposed to light and working with it. A few times, I could see that I had too much light coming through my lens, so I lowered my aperture to decrease the amount of light entering and increasing my shutter speed so that there was not a lot of time for light to get in. Sill, though, I did not realize a few of my pictures were overexposed. If I could do this project again, I would continue to explore around and find more evidence of age/use around Milford. I really enjoyed this project. I loved walking around downtown and looking at finer details to photograph.
